The Real Problems: Swirls, Scratches, and High Maintenance Paint

Most Porsche owners don’t come in because their paint is “bad.” They come in because it doesn’t look the way it should. Under direct light you start to see the swirl marks from automatic washes, light scratching from improper hand washing, and a general loss of depth in the finish. On darker colors especially, the paint starts to look hazy instead of sharp.

The other issue is maintenance. Keeping a daily-driven Cayenne clean without protection is a constant cycle. It gets dirty quickly, it doesn’t release contaminants easily, and every wash introduces more micro-marring if you’re not extremely careful. Over time, that compounds into a finish that looks older than the vehicle actually is.

What Paint Correction and Ceramic Coating Actually Does

Paint correction is the process of removing defects from the clear coat. That means leveling swirl marks, reducing or eliminating scratches where safely possible, and restoring clarity and gloss to the paint. This is not a filler or a glaze—this is permanent defect removal through controlled machine polishing.

Ceramic coating is a chemical-resistant protective layer that goes on after the paint is corrected. When bonded to your paint, this coating repels dirt and grime, but more importantly resists staining from things like bird poop and tree sap, keeping your car cleaner longer between regular maintenance.

Correction creates the finish. The coating preserves it.

Prep Matters More Than the Coating

Most of the quality in a ceramic coating job comes from what happens before the machine ever touches the paint.

Our prep process includes:

A proper three-bucket wash method to minimize wash-induced marring
Full wheel and tire cleaning to remove brake dust and old dressing
Chemical decontamination to dissolve iron and embedded fallout
Mechanical decontamination where required to remove bonded contaminants

If this step is rushed, you’re polishing contaminants into the paint and compromising both the correction and the coating bond.

H ow I Determine the Level of Paint Correction Needed

Every vehicle gets evaluated before I choose a polishing approach. I’m looking at:

Defect depth and severity
Paint hardness (it varies greatly from manufacturer to manufactuer)
Paint thickness readings
Owner expectations (daily driver vs. show-level finish)

From there I perform a test spot to find the least aggressive method that produces the desired result. Some Cayennes need a single-step polish to restore gloss. Others require a multi-step correction with compounding followed by refinement to remove heavier defects and restore clarity.

The goal is always maximum defect removal with minimum clear coat removal, which is why I train my staff to operate conservatively.

On this Cayenne, we found that a two-step paint correction was necessary to get the paint finish clear.

Which Ceramic Coating to Choose?

Here at Humble Crew Auto Spa, we have two ceramic coating packages to choose from.

Bronze is a solid place to start. It has us apply our standard traditional ceramic coating, which is a great performer at a solid price tag. When bonded to your paint, this coating repels dirt and grime, but more importantly resists staining from things like bird poop and tree sap, keeping your car cleaner longer between regular maintenance. It comes in at $599 , and is our most affordable long term coating. These types of coatings require more diligent maintenance, but perform well under care.

Silver is an introduction to our Hybrid coatings. The hybrid coatings are more flexible, giving the coating the ability to expand and contract with different climates (like temperature swings). That flexibility gives you more consistent performance, meaning you can go further between washes without the coating fully wearing down (unlike more traditional coatings), keeping maintenance for you a breeze. These coatings do better under less strict maintenance schedules, and are great if you can't wash your car every other week.

Our silver package is at $1350 , and is backed under a five year warranty. Silver will perform past five years with proper care.

What can I expect if I get this done?

The biggest difference you’ll notice isn’t just how the car looks when you pick it up—it’s how it behaves every time you wash it afterward.

Because the coating creates a slick, chemically resistant surface, dirt and brake dust don’t bond to the paint the same way they do on bare clear coat. That means most washes take less time, require less scrubbing, and carry a lower risk of adding new swirl marks. You’re not fighting the paint to get it clean anymore.

Water behavior changes immediately. Instead of sitting flat on the surface and leaving mineral deposits behind, water beads and sheets off quickly. The benefit there is fewer water spots and easier drying, especially on a large vehicle like a Cayenne.

Long term, the paint holds its gloss without needing frequent polishing. Since you’re not constantly compounding away defects, you preserve clear coat thickness and maintain a sharper finish for years instead of months. You still have to wash the vehicle, and it’s not scratch-proof, but the maintenance becomes safer and more predictable.

Tesla PPF: a guide

Should I get PPF on my new Tesla? What's the difference between a good installer and a subpar one?

Paint Protection Film is one of the few upgrades that actually preserves both the appearance and the long-term value of a Tesla. The film absorbs rock chips that would otherwise fracture the soft factory clear (Tesla's have notoriously thin and fragile paint finishes), it prevents the sandblasting effect you see on front bumpers and lower doors, and it creates a sacrificial layer that can self-heal from light wash marring. The benefit isn’t just fewer paint defects—it’s a car that stays cleaner, looks newer for longer, and doesn’t require constant paint correction to maintain. On white Teslas especially, that means avoiding the peppered front end and the dull, hazed look that shows up within the first year of driving.

Where people get caught off guard is assuming PPF is the same no matter who installs it. It isn’t. You can put the same film on two Teslas and get two very different results. One will look clean and almost invisible, while the other will have noticeable lines, edges that collect dirt, and areas that start to peel over time. The difference comes down to the quality of the installation and how much care is put into the visible details, not just whether the panel was covered.

It starts with prep - not paint protection film.

Most of the visible problems in PPF installs come from what happens before the film ever touches the car.

On Teslas ( even brand new! ), I expect:

-Heavy transport fallout

-Embedded iron

-Adhesive residue from factory plastics

-Light factory sanding marks in the clear

If that isn’t removed, it gets permanently sealed under the film. That’s why I run a full chemical decontamination ( iron , bugs, tar, tree sap), controlled contact wash, and only clay when absolutely necessary to avoid marring the soft clear.

Coverage means nothing if the film isn't installed right.

A lot of Tesla PPF jobs technically “cover” the panel but leave a visible film line. On white paint that turns into a dark dirt border within weeks.

I tuck every edge I can. That means:

-Wrapping past the panel break when possible

-Trimming corners with a custom install so that the coverage is VERY tight

-Extending pre-cut panels using our software (fenders, bumper, etc)

When we install PPF this way, the film gets tucked around the edges as well. Tucked film not only looks better, but with less exposed edges, is less likely to lift over time.

For Teslas specifically, we go the extra mile and remove the black front wheel cladding to clean and tuck the film there as well. The end result is a significantly cleaner installation, no seams, and better durability.

Why White Teslas Show Bad PPF Installs Immediately

White paint amplifies:

-Edge lines

-Trapped debris

-Uneven stretch marks

What looks acceptable on darker paint looks unfinished on white. That’s why edge work and cleanliness matter more here than on almost any other color. Although the wash and prep seem excessive sometimes, it's how I go the extra mile to make sure that we have a clean, consistent installation every time.

So should you get PPF on your new Tesla?

If you plan to keep your Tesla for more than a couple of years and you care about how the front end looks, PPF is worth it. The factory paint is thin, the panels take direct road impact, and the damage shows up quickly—especially on white. PPF gives you a sacrificial layer that takes the abuse so the actual paint doesn’t. That means fewer rock chips, less visible wear, and a car that still looks clean years later instead of looking sandblasted after the first highway commute.

If you’re turning the car over in a year or two and you’re not concerned about cosmetic wear, you’re unlikely to recover the cost. PPF is a long-term preservation decision, not a short-term cosmetic upgrade.

This week, we had this brand-new 2025 Jeep Gladiator come into the shop, and our client wanted the best protection possible for his truck. He’s planning on keeping it for the long haul, and with how much these trucks get exposed to rock chips, road debris, and scratches, Paint Protection Film (PPF) was the only way to go.

The Gladiator has a lot of complex body lines and sharp edges, which means extra time and precision are required to make everything fit seamlessly.

Before any film touches the paint, we always start with a deep wash and decontamination — making sure every inch of the surface is clean. Any dust or residue left behind can cause the film to fail or lift later on, so prep work is one of the most important parts of the job

Once the truck was spotless, I inspected the paint and did some paint correction to remove minor imperfections. This step makes a huge difference — I had to make sure I had a near perfect finish before laying film over it.

We used a high-quality, Paint Protection Film Plano designed to handle the daily abuse that trucks like this endure. Starting with the hood, I carefully lined up each section using a slip solution to position the film perfectly before locking it in place with heat and pressure. On the Gladiator, I wanted every seam hidden, so I wrapped as many edges as possible for maximum protection and a clean look. Once all the panels were done, I gave the whole truck a thorough inspection under multiple lighting angles — checking for any film over hang, debris or air pockets that needed to be asessed.

After hours of work, seeing the final result made it all worth it. The Gladiator looked incredible — the gloss was deep, reflections were crisp, and every inch of that paint was now protected from whatever the road throws at it.

Bringing Life Back to a Porsche Boxster | Full Front PPF + Ceramic Coating

When this Porsche Boxster rolled into our shop, it had definitely seen better days. The car had been repainted at some point, and while it looked decent from a distance, up close the paint was in rough shape. Full of swirls, haze, and waterspots that took away from the deep gloss this car deservess.

Our client came to us frustrated. He wanted his Boxster to finally look as good as it should and, more importantly, to stay that way. That’s where we came in.

Step 1: Restoring the Paint

We started with a two-step paint correction. A process that safely removes deep swirl marks, oxidation, and surface defects. This is one of those stages where the magic really happens. Layer by layer, we brought back that deep, mirror-like shine Porsche paint is known for. You could see the color start to come alive again, and the reflections sharpen up as we refined each panel.

We took the time to put the soft top down and mask off gaskets and plastics with tape. This is important to make sure that we don't get compound in the porous materials

By the time we were done, the transformation was night and day. What was once dull and tired now looked brand new, like it just rolled off the showroom floor.

Step 2: Protecting the Investment with PPF

After getting the paint looking flawless, it was time to make sure it stayed that way. We applied Paint Protection Film to the entire front end, covering the bumper, hood, fenders, and mirrors. Before any film is installed, we start by protecting the interior. Porsche interiors, in particular, use adhesives that react poorly to moisture, which can cause bubbling, swelling, or warping if not handled properly.

To avoid that, we remove anything that could trap moisture or block access. Door cards, trim panels, and rear seat covers all come off, and when necessary, even the rear passenger armrests. When working on the windshield, we lay a protective plastic barrier across the dashboard and position a microfiber rug to catch and redirect any runoff.

Glass Surface Preparation

A flawless tint job starts with proper glass prep. The film is only as clean and durable as the surface it bonds to.

We begin by using a glass-safe scuff pad to remove anything embedded in the pores of the glass—contaminants that regular cleaners can't reach. Installation & Adhesive Bonding

With the film shaped, we move inside the vehicle and peel the adhesive liner. Using a mixture of soap and water called slip solution to float the tint onto the glass so it can be positioned precisely.

Once aligned, we extract the solution using squeegees to lock the film into place, removing air and moisture, to create a clean, uniform adhesive bond.

Reassembly & Final Quality Inspection

After the tint is secured, we reinstall every component exactly as it came out—no forced clips, no misaligned panels, no shortcuts.

To finish, we perform a complete quality inspection. We check for light leaks , edge flaws, contamination, and imperfections. We also verify that the interior materials—especially leather—remain completely untouched and moisture-free.

At Humble Crew Auto Spa, precision is everything — especially when a car like the 2024 Honda Civic Type R comes through our doors. This vehicle represents the peak of Honda’s performance engineering, and that deserves the highest level of preservation. Our team performed a full front end paint protection film (PPF) installation followed by a ceramic coating treatment to lock in that fresh-off-the-lot gloss and ensure the paint stays pristine for years to come.

Step 1: Trim Removal for a Seamless Install

The slow heat “locks in” the film, ensuring it won’t lift over time — even around tight bumper recesses and headlight edges. This step is incredibly important to make sure our bespoke install doesn't lift, and is commonly skipped by amateur shops who want to save time.

Step 4: Ceramic Coating for Ultimate Surface Protection

After completing the PPF install, we applied NXTZEN Elite Ceramic Coating to seal the remaining vehicle. Ceramic Coatings are designed for chemical protection, specifically water spots, bird poop, bug guts, tree sap, and dirt/grime. The Process

Ferrari designed the Roma to be clean and minimal—no busy vents to hide mistakes. That leaves nowhere to hide for an installer. Here’s what I pay attention to:

-The long aluminum hood with a subtle crown. I anchor and pre-stretch so the film lays without tension lines across the crown. I remove the hood badge when appropriate (or custom inlay if removal isn’t preferred) and wrap edges underneath for a factory look.

-Front bumper with tight negative radii around the grille corners. This is where hacks over-stretch film and it lifts later. I map anchor points, use controlled heat to set memory, and—when the geometry demands—place a micro-seam deep in a shadow line rather than torture one massive piece.

-Headlamp and DRL pockets. Those “eyelid” recesses create compound curves. I float the film with a low-tack slip, lock reference points, and chase water out in phases so there’s no tension “smiling back” at you a week later.

-Front fenders and (optional) Scuderia shields. Around shield edges, I modify patterns for relief and use micro-inlays so nothing lifts or prints through.

-Doors and the gentle side scallop. The Roma’s doors look simple, but the curvature transitions are sneaky. I wrap into the leading/trailing edges (within safe tolerances) and protect the gloss black B-pillars—they scratch if you breathe on them.

-Mirrors. I’ll bulk a mirror in one piece when the film’s elongation allows clean distortion-free coverage; otherwise, I split it with a seam hidden on the underside. No hero installs that creep back later.

-Roof and A-pillars. I run roof sections with straight, uniform tension so there’s no diagonal shear that can telegraph in sun. A-pillar edges get tucked and heat-set.

-Rear quarters and hips. This is probably the hardest part about the install. Because the roof is attached to the rear fenders in one long, cohesive piece, there needs to be a seam where the roof meets the rear fenders. We do the seam right where the rear side windows align with the top of the rear glass.

-Fuel door and pocket. I pop the door and wrap the lip so you don’t see paint edges each time you fill up.

-Rear bumper/diffuser. Sensors, corners, and diffuser curves get broken into logical sections with seams buried in natural breaks. I’d rather give you smart, invisible seams than pretend a one-piece is “better” and doom it to lift.

-Badges and scripts. I remove and reinstall with alignment jigs. If not, I plot/hand-trim crisp inlays so the edges are neat and protected.

Bottom line

Full-body PPF on a Roma isn’t about throwing film at panels—it’s about respecting the shape and managing tension so the car looks untouched, just safer. If you bought a Roma, you didn’t buy it to worry. You bought it to drive.

Should I invest the money on PPF for my Tesla? Why's it so expensive anyway?

When a brand-new Tesla Model Y rolls into my shop, my first thought is always the same: Let’s make sure it stays looking brand new for as long as possible.

That was exactly the mission with this pearl white Model Y. Why I Recommend PPF Over Everything Else

PPF is a thick, self-healing film that goes directly over your vehicle’s paint. Unlike ceramic coatings, which mostly add gloss and slickness, PPF is all about physical durability .

You know those rock chips you get from highway driving?
PPF takes those hits.
Bug splatter and acidic bird droppings that etch into your clear coat?
PPF blocks them.
Brushes from shrubs when backing out of tight spaces, sand kicked up from trucks, even light scratches from fingernails or car washes—PPF eats it all.

And if you get minor hazy swirl marks? Heat or sunlight “heals” it right back.

To put it bluntly: it saves your paint. And a proper repaint—especially on a Tesla—isn’t cheap. A hood respray alone can cost anywhere from $1,200 to $2,500 and still might not match perfectly.

So why not prevent that bill altogether?

We Start With a Deep Decontamination—Not Just a Wash

Before we even think about laying film, the first step is always prep. And when I say prep, I don’t just mean a quick soap and rinse. I’m talking about chemical decontamination that breaks down everything hiding in or on the paint.

This Model Y got:

Bug remover on the front clip to soften and remove acidic insect residue
Iron remover (we used IronX here) to chemically dissolve embedded metal particles—those come from brake dust and industrial fallout
A full foam pre-soak , followed by a contact wash with clean mitts
Rinsing into every crevice—like under the windshield trim and inside fender gaps—so we don’t trap dirt under the film

If you skip this part, the film won’t lay clean. Worse, it might lift early or seal in debris that ruins the look. That’s not acceptable for me or for my clients.

Here’s where the extra time in an install really shows—edge work, especially on white paint. You’ve probably seen cars where there’s a faint line a few millimeters in from the panel edge. On darker colors it can blend in, but on white it collects dirt quickly and starts to look like an outline. To avoid that, I wrap the film past the visible edge whenever the panel design allows, so the termination point is hidden underneath. When the edge is out of sight, there’s nowhere for grime to build up and the finish stays clean.

On this vehicle we also removed the front wheel well liners so the film could be wrapped deeper into the fender lips. That area still takes debris even though you don’t see it, and stopping at the visible edge leaves paint exposed. It takes more time to disassemble and reinstall those parts, but it allows the film to sit farther in, reduces the chance of future lifting, and gives more complete coverage. Details like that don’t stand out at first glance, but they make a difference in how the install holds up.

We Cut Corners—The Right Way

Corners are where most PPF installs either look factory or start to fail. It’s the point where the shape of the panel changes in multiple directions, and if you try to force the film to wrap it in one piece, it almost always shows. You’ll see thick buildup, faint tension marks, or edges that eventually lift once the car sits in the sun.

Instead of stretching the film and hoping it holds, I treat corners as their own step in the process. I lay the film normally, then make small, controlled relief cuts so the material can settle into the shape of the panel without fighting itself. After that, I heat and set each section just enough to wrap it cleanly behind the edge. It takes more time, but the result is a corner that sits flat, stays down, and doesn’t draw attention to itself.

In the photos, the film edge doesn’t bunch or wrap awkwardly around the corner. It follows the natural shape of the panel, sits flat, and holds its position without creating extra lift points. Each cut is intentional, and every corner is heat set so it stays locked down over time. No loose edges, no rework later.

I look at corners the same way you’d look at stitching on a tailored piece—if it’s done right, you don’t notice it at all. When the rest of the install is clean, those small details are what people’s eyes go to first, so the goal is for them to see nothing.

The Finished Result: Invisible, Durable, and Clean

When we finished this Model Y, you couldn’t tell anything was on it. That’s the point. It still looked like a brand-new Tesla—but now it has seamless protection baked in.

The hood edges were fully tucked
Every corner was tight and smooth

Tesla Model Y Juniper Window Tint: Is it more or less complex than a normal car?

In today's post, we walk through a complex tint installation on a 2024 Tesla Model Y in Juniper. Due to the oversized rear hatch glass and aggressive curve, tinting this vehicle presents several nuanced challenges, even for seasoned installers.

�� Process Overview:

1. Surface Prep — Contamination Control

The first and arguably most critical phase of tinting a Tesla Model Y — especially one with a full rear hatch glass — is **surface decontamination**. Due to the sheer size and exposure of the glass, even microscopic particles can compromise film adhesion, causing bubbles, edge lift, or long-term failure.

We implemented a dual-phase cleaning cycle:

Phase One: The glass was saturated with a non-ammonia, tint-safe soap solution mixed with distilled water to avoid mineral deposits.

Phase Two: After the initial wipe-down, a fresh soap solution was applied, and a stainless steel 1" blade scraper was used to remove stubborn debris, adhesive residue from transport tape, or manufacturer-applied coatings. This step is performed with overlapping strokes to prevent streaking or missed spots.

Special attention was directed to two high-risk zones:

Defroster Grid Lines: These embedded electrical traces are notorious for trapping debris and are highly sensitive to film lift if improperly cleaned. Using a low-angle scrape and horizontal strokes, we cleaned along the grid, not across it, to prevent delamination or scratching.

Lower Corners and Edge Seals: The Model Y’s trunk edge gathers a surprising amount of grime even brand new, especially in the corner radius and under rubber seals. We flushed these out using a plastic-tip spray wand and followed up with cotton swabs and edge tools wrapped in microfiber to wick out moisture and dirt.

After cleaning, the glass was left to flash dry under shop lighting, followed by a secondary lint inspection using a high-lumen inspection light at a low angle. This helped us detect any airborne particles or remaining fibers before moving to the shrink and install phase.

2. Film Shrinking — Vertical Hinge Method

The Tesla hatch uses a compound curve that necessitates controlled shrink. A vertical hinge technique was implemented to prevent sideways distortion. We used a soap solution base for dry shrinking, paired with intermittent heat.

3. Install — Inner Glass, Wet Mount

The shaped film was floated with generous slip solution and installed using a hybrid squeegee method. Tight corners required hard card edge work and controlled heat reflow.

4. Heat Sealing — Infrared Line Reinforcement

-Perfect for Frameless Windows: Teslas auto-index their windows every time the door opens or closes. A standard 1–2mm gap in a traditional tint job can be highly visible as the window shifts. Shaved tinting eliminates that problem.

-Cleaner Seal Behind Gaskets: On the Model Y, the outer sweep gasket sits tight against the glass. When tint is shaved cleanly to the edge and tucked slightly below the seal, water displacement during rain or washes is less likely to disturb the film.

Full Color PPF completely changes this Porsche 718 Spyder

What happens when you combine the best form of paint protection with a unique finish that resembles a high end paint job? That's what Jesse wanted with his new-to-him Porsche 718 Spyder. We transformed his car with a full-body Ultrafit Phoenix Red color PPF installation.

The process was superbly grueling, and this project took over 100 man hours of labor, involving full disassembly, bulk film installation, edge wrapping, and a finish that looks indistinguishable from custom paint. Here’s how we did it.

To achieve a flawless look, we fully disassembled the Porsche — a step skipped by many but absolutely essential for pro-level results.

Front Bumper

We removed the wheels and wheel liners, detached the underbody screws and frunk bolts, popped out the side markers, removed the headlights, and gently slid the bumper off after disconnecting electricals — all to ensure the bumper could be fully wrapped without seams or exposed edges.

Rear Bumper (I hate this part the most):

Taking off the rear bumper is a bit of a process. First, we remove the spoiler to access the tail lights. Once the tail lights are out, we can get to the bolts that hold on the Porsche light bar that runs across the back — that comes off next.

After that, we remove all the bolts and clips holding the bumper on, including some underneath and inside the fender liners. Once everything is disconnected, we carefully pull the bumper off.

Removing the rear bumper on the 718 Spyder is already a bit of a process — but separating the rear diffuser from the bumper is honestly one of the biggest headaches. That diffuser is tightly secured with clips and bolts, and it sits in some pretty tight spots, so getting it apart without damaging anything takes patience and finesse.

You have to carefully work around hidden fasteners and use pry tools to loosen it without cracking or scratching the parts. It’s a slow, delicate job, but it’s totally worth it because separating those pieces lets us wrap the rear bumper perfectly and tuck the film edges out of sight for a clean, factory finish.

Door Handles:

To get the door handles off, we first take off the interior door panel. Once that’s out of the way, we can reach behind and disconnect the rods and cables that link the handle to the latch. After that, it’s just a couple of bolts and the handle slides out from the outside.

Side Mirrors:

For the mirrors, we pop off the little triangular trim piece on the inside of the door. That gives us access to the bolts holding the mirror in place. We unplug the wiring (for power and heating), undo the bolts, and then pull the mirror straight off.

Disassembling the Rear Plastic Bar Between the Trunk “Humps”:

On the Spyder’s rear trunk, there’s a plastic bar that connects the two raised humps near the roll hoop covers. This piece needs to be removed to fully access and protect the trunk area during the PPF install.

Removing it involves carefully loosening several hidden bolts and clips that secure the bar in place. Because it fits snugly between the humps and under the roll hoops, it takes some patience to gently pry it free without damaging the plastic or surrounding paint. Once removed, it exposes the full surface so we can wrap the film cleanly around these complex curves and edges.

This step is tricky but necessary for full coverage without any seams, and cannot be done without this tedious step.

So with all of that out of the way, now we can finally get to laying some film.

This is where expertise matters. We did a bulk installation, which means minimal pre-cut kits, no shortcuts — just precision film handling with every piece custom-fitted by hand.

Squeegee Technique

Every installer has their style, but here are our key principles:

Soft-edge squeegees are ideal for initial lay-downs to avoid micro-scratches.
Firm-edge squeegees (using the backside of our rubber squeegees) are used to push out slip solution and seal the film to the surface. This step is important, and we do it as an "insurance" swipe to get rid of any small bubbles that might've slipped our eyes.
We always work from the center outward , using overlapping passes in controlled, even pressure strokes — never dragging too far or skipping zones to prevent air trapping.

Edge and Corner Wrapping

Corners are where most installs fail — but here’s how we make ours disappear:

Overwrap the edge by ¼–½ inch , then post-heat gently.
Use a sharp blade to relieve the corner with a single 45° cut right underneath the corner perimeter, on the bottom side. This gives us a very tight corner that either tucks or goes all the way to the edge of the panel.
Tuck each flap down separately using a soft glove or squeegee tip, then seal it with heat to lock it in place.

This keeps corners tight, clean, and resistant to peeling or lifting over time.

Post-Installation Cleanup & Lock-In Process

A PPF job isn’t finished when the film’s on — the finish work is where the job earns its value.

Post-heating : Every wrapped edge and corner is gently reheated to activate the adhesive and “lock in” the film, preventing future lifting.
Edge sealing : We inspect all door jambs, gas caps, hood lines, and wheel arches to ensure no moisture or air remains trapped. This is done at the same time as the post-heating step.
Panel alignment check : Everything we removed earlier needs to go back on. After reassembly, we confirm that all removed parts fit flush, ensuring OEM-level appearance. On German cars in particular, if your clips aren't 100% lined up , you'll see the fitment slightly off, striking your OCD alarm. Let's just say we sat there for a while and stared at the car over a less-than-1mm gap.

Holy cow we are done.

After over 100 hours of labor, we are done with this install. It was beyond tedious, and completely non-standard for PPF installs (most of the time). With color PPF, you really can't get away with a standard install, as the original color will poke through if you don't get full coverage. The end result is a car that really turns heads at car shows, all while being fully protected from most of the wear and tear it'll experience on the roads and on the track (that's right, Jesse tracks this car).

Color PPF is one of the most labor and skill intensive trades in this field, requiring patience, precision, and technique. The idea here is that if we're good at color PPF, we're probably pretty decent at regular clear bra too.

Step 1: Surface Prep – The Foundation of a Flawless Finish

Before any film or coating goes on a vehicle, proper surface prep is crucial. We started by thoroughly washing and decontaminating the Yukon's factory gloss paint. This included:

-Snow foam bath

-Iron Decontamtion to remove embedded iron particles in the paint

-Clay bar treatment, which removes embedded contamination that isn't removed with a wash

-Wheels, tires, trim (like the front grill), headlights, and all panels underneath are cleaned

This process ensures that every surface is perfectly clean and smooth for optimal film adhesion.

Step 2: Disassembly
When we are doing full body matte PPF, it's important to remove trim and badges to get a seamless installation of the film over the panels. We removed door handles, mirrors, badges, and trim to ensure a clean tuck of all our PPF. This gives the installation not only great looks, but far better durability over time. Without exposed edges, the film is far less likely to catch and lift, improving its longevity on this car's paint.

Step 3: Full-Body Matte PPF Installation

Step 4: Reassembly

For badges, we reattach them to the vehicle using premade templates of the badges (that we made before removal).
